2017 West Point Camporee

55th Annual West Point Invitational Camporee


What: A very large camporee with 6,500 scouts and scouters from all over the East held at the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York.


When: Thursday, April 27, 2017 through Sunday, April 30, 2017. We will leave the Parish Center after school on that Thursday requiring scouts to miss a day of school – notes to schools will be required in advance.  We’ll arrive back in Reading late Sunday afternoon.


Where: The United States Military Academy at West Point – New York


Who: Scouts and leaders of Troop 728, plus about 6,500 other scouts and leaders from the Eastern Seaboard.


Cost: $50 per person covers entry fee and food/transportation costs. You’ll need some spending money for Thursday’s dinner, lunch on Sunday, and if you want to buy any West Point gear at the museum or gift shop. Adult drivers will pay the $50, but will be reimbursed for gas and tolls. The troop treasury is contributing $30 per attendee toward this trip, thanks to the success of our fundraising efforts.


Why: Tour the campus of the United States Military Academy and the Army Museum.  Camp somewhere unique, have a great time taking part in challenging competitive activities:  Camouflage, Litter/first aid, knot tying, Leader Reaction Course, drill (marching and movement on a field, ceremonies), fire building, wilderness survival, swiss seat/one rope bridge, land navigation, Commander’s Challenge (a mystery event, it will be tough and of a military nature), rubber raft/canoe obstacle course on a lake, fitness challenge, and a TAC Challenge (similar to capture the flag).


Some non-competitive events as well:  Display of current military weapons and accessories, demonstrations of military skills by active duty soldiers (air assault, helicopter landing, etc.).There will be a chance to tour the academy, meet cadets, perform skits at a gigantic campfire, and compete in a Troop Gateway Competition.  Religious services are available on Saturday evening.


Next: Complete the Troop 728 Permission Slip and return it to Mr. Terry or Mr. Galvin with your payment (or statement of $45 rank advancement scholarship) no later than Monday, March 27.  Additional forms will be required later in March or in April.
